You know what’s more annoying than Donald Trump winning the election? Donald Trump messing up your Google Analytics.

If you’re a blogger then you’ve no doubt noticed that you’ve been receiving ‘fake traffic’ under the language “Secret.ɢoogle.com You are invited! Enter only with this ticket URL. Copy it. Vote for Trump!” over the past few weeks.

Confusing many – I mean why would anyone bother to do this – the spam bot went from slightly annoying before the election to rage levels of PLEASE GET OUT OF HERE over the past week.

Some bloggers have reported an increase of up to 600% page views due to the bot, and it’s skewing figures left right and centre. Thankfully, it isn’t too hard to remove Donald Trump from Google Analytics – as well as other spam bots.

Why would anyone create this?

In a nutshell – and without getting too complicated – the bot basically manipulates Google Analytics to make it look like you have had traffic. You haven’t, and there’s a simple way of getting rid of this from your reporting.

So how do you remove Donald Trump from Google Analytics?

Thankfully, it’s pretty easy. All you need to do is create a custom filter.

  1. Go to “Admin” and then to “All Filters”
  2. Click “Add filter”
  3. Give the filter a name
  4. Click on Filter Type “Custom”
  5. Click “Include”
  6. Click “Select Field” and select “Hostname”
  7. Under “Filter Pattern”, add the domain name of your website (e.g. “selizabethdaly.co.uk”)
  8. Apply the filter to all of your profiles in Google Analytics

Once you’ve completed this, not only did you remove Donald Trump from Google Analytics, you will also have safeguarded your site against most spam bots.

How to remove the referral spam from your reports

Again – this is very easy. All you need to do is add a filter to your reports:

  1. Create a new segment
  2. Click on ‘Conditions’ under ‘Advanced’
  3. Change ‘Include’ to ‘Exclude’
  4. Search for ‘Language’ in the first drop down, ‘matches’ in the second and then paste “Secret.ɢoogle.com You are invited! Enter only with this ticket URL. Copy it. Vote for Trump!” into the text box and hit save

It’s as simple as that – now you can run your reports and not worry about your data being incorrect, and you’ll be safe from future spammers!
